Random Number Theory: How Lottery Draws Are Kept Fair

Two mechanisms

Draws use either gravity-pick or air-mix ball machines, or certified random number generators. Ball sets are weighed and rotated; machines are tested on schedules and results are audited by independent firms.

What auditors test

• Uniformity: does each number appear at its expected rate over large samples (chi-square goodness-of-fit)?
• Independence: are consecutive draws uncorrelated (serial correlation and runs tests)?
• Equipment integrity: ball weight, diameter, and wear tolerances.
• Procedure: pre-draw randomisation of ball set and machine selection.

Why this matters to analysts

If a draw passes these tests — and published Canadian draws consistently do — then by definition there is no exploitable pattern. Any 'pattern' a tool shows you is sampling noise. An honest analytics platform reports that clearly.
