Pick Patterns: Combination Shapes and Why They Matter for Sharing
2026-09-14 · 7 min read
Odd/even splits, decade spread, consecutive pairs and the 1–31 birthday trap — what pick patterns do and do not change about a lottery ticket.
Every combination of six numbers from 49 is exactly as likely as every other: 1 in 13,983,816. 1-2-3-4-5-6 and 4-17-23-31-38-45 have identical probability. What differs is how many other people picked the same line — and that decides whether a jackpot is yours or a fifth of yours.
The 1–31 birthday trap
A large share of hand-picked tickets use birthdays and anniversaries, so numbers 1 through 31 are heavily over-played and 32 through 49 are under-played. Including several high numbers does not raise your chance of winning by one part in a million, but it measurably lowers the chance of splitting a prize you do win.
Shapes worth knowing
- Odd/even split: three-three and four-two splits cover the large majority of real draws; all-odd or all-even lines are rare simply because few combinations have that shape.
- Decade spread: draws that spread across the 1–9, 10–19, 20–29, 30–39 and 40–49 bands are common because most combinations do. Tight clusters are rare for the same reason.
- Consecutive pairs: one consecutive pair appears far more often than players expect, and is not a sign of a faulty draw.
- Patterns on the slip: diagonals, straight lines and neat geometric shapes are picked by many people at once. They are the worst choices for sharing risk.
Shape frequency is not number frequency
It is easy to misread this. Saying '3 odd / 3 even appears most often' describes how many combinations have that shape, not a tendency in the machine. You are observing combinatorics, not momentum. No shape is 'due'.
A defensible way to pick
- Include at least two numbers above 31.
- Avoid an all-low or all-clustered line unless you actively want it.
- Do not chase overdue numbers; they carry no information about the next draw.
- Pick a method you can repeat without thinking about it, so choosing never costs you more than the ticket.
The honest summary
Pick patterns are a jackpot-sharing tool, not a winning tool. Use them to avoid the crowd, and keep your expectations set by the odds rather than by the shape of your line.
